How and why are animals used in research?

Only where there is no alternative and where the outcomes of the research will be of benefit to those affected by MND, will MND Scotland provide funds which involves the use of animals. Those institutions that are supported by a grant from us must demonstrate that they are adhering to the 3Rs principles of Reduction, Replacement, Refinement. We support the AMRC principles on the use of animals in research as outlined in this statement. For more information on how and why animals are used in research please see the AMRC FAQ sheet which can be found here.

_____________________________________________________________
As of 17/09/2024, 12.5% of active MND Scotland funded projects use animals (mice) in their research. This is lower than the 21% of projects funded by all AMRC member charities combined which use animals. (Use of animals in AMRC charity-funded research | Association of Medical Research Charities) In any project where animals are used the minimum number possible are used and only when there is no alternative animal-free method to carry out the research.
