On the final countdown to the 2018 London Marathon, John Lamont MP is prepared to hit the ground running for MND.
On the 22nd April the Member of Parliament, for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, will join a record number of his colleagues in running the London Marathon for worthy causes.
In honour of fellow Borderer, Doddie Weir, John has chosen to help raise awareness and funds for both MND Scotland and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Over the Easter weekend, John was presented with his MND Scotland running top by his local MND Scotland Trustee, Will Roberts, at Melrose Rugby Club – Doddie Weir’s former club.
At least one MP has run in each of the 37 London Marathons since the first event in 1981. This year a record number of MPs will be running the event on 22nd April 2018.
John has decided to raise money for MND after the positive way in which Doddie Weir reacted to his own diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease. He has set himself a target of at least £3,000, which will be split equally between the two charities.
This will be John’s third marathon, following New York in 2011 and Edinburgh in 2012. John also completed an Ironman Triathlon in 2014.
John Lamont MP said: “After I was lucky enough to secure a place in this year’s London Marathon, I wanted to do my bit to raise some money to fight MND. Thanks to everyone who has donated already.
“Both MND Scotland the Doddie’s Foundation are doing excellent work supporting MND sufferers and their families as well as working hard to find treatments and ultimately a cure for MND.
“I’ve now just a few weeks to go and while training hasn’t been made particularly easy by the weather, I feel as ready as I can be! Wearing my MND Scotland top will certainly be motivation to get round and I’m looking forward to the crowds which I hear are very supportive in London.”
MND Scotland Trustee, Will Roberts said: “It’s great that John has chosen to support MND Scotland, as well as Doddie’s Foundation.
“Doddie’s work since his diagnosis has really raised awareness of the disease and is helping to inspire others to do fundraising.
“I know from my own fundraising efforts how generous Borderers are and I’m sure that this will continue.
“The race is on to find a cure for MND and every pound John raises in his own race will bring us a step closer to beating the disease.”
