MND Scotland statement on assisted dying

MND Scotland has, historically, taken a neutral stance on assisted dying.

In September 2023, this was reviewed and discussed at length by the charity’s Board of Trustees. The Board agreed that it is appropriate to maintain this position.

As a charity, we are here to support everyone affected by MND and we understand that within the MND community in Scotland there are widely varying, and deeply personal, views on the subject. By retaining the organisation’s neutral stance, we believe we are better able to provide a space for the community to engage with us, and feel able to safely do so regardless of individual views.

As part of the Board’s review discussion, it was further agreed that in addition to continuing to drive greater access to appropriate high quality, end of life care for everyone with MND in Scotland, the charity would become more active in the palliative care space. MND Scotland will seek to collaborate and engage with more like-minded organisations to deliver the most appropriate levels of care and support when and where they are most needed.

MND Scotland remains committed to helping make time count for everyone affected by MND across the country.
