Because of your support, MND Scotland has enjoyed one of its biggest ever MND Awareness Weeks!
During the week we announced that we would be investing £583,000 into 4 new research projects to help take us a step closer to finding a cure for MND. We also announced that MND Scotland would be matching the Scottish Government’s commitment, to invest £25,000 into the Gordon Aikman Scholarship, bringing the total to £50,000. The Scholarship will enable people with MND, their carers and healthcare professionals to investigate and implement new ways of caring for people with MND.
For Awareness Week, we shared the stories of eight people living with MND in Scotland. Their bravery helped us reach out and raise awareness of MND and how it affects real lives. You can read all of their MND experiences on our website.
On Wednesday, Team MND Scotland spent the day at the Scottish Parliament, where MSPs were hosting a debate on MND care in Scotland. Many MSPs made tributes to rugby giant, Doddie Weir, who announced his diagnosis with MND on Tuesday.
In the evening we hosted a reception in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament, where people with MND, supporters, carers and politicians had the opportunity to hear from the First Minister and our Chairman Lawrence Cowan.
Landmarks all over Scotland also lit up in blue to celebrate Global MND Awareness Day. The Kelpies, the Hydro and Inverness Castle were some of the landmarks lighting up to support the campaign.
During the week, our official charity partner, the ScotRail Alliance, renewed its commitment to making Scotland’s railway more accessible, encouraging people with MND to use the railway and take advantage of the ScotRail Customer Assist service.
On Thursday evening, MND Scotland was honoured to receive the People’s Choice Award for Gordon’s Fightback campaign, after missing out on the Cracking Campaign award. Thank you to everyone who voted for Gordon’s Fightback, so that we could highlight Gordon’s incredible achievements.
