Aberdeen man honours family friend with 5k-a-day fundraising challenge for motor neuron disease

Michael Hopkins, 42, from Aberdeen, has embarked on an inspiring journey to raise funds and important awareness for MND Scotland by taking on a 5K-a-day challenge this year as a tribute to a family friend battling the disease.

Originally from Stonehaven, Michael lives in Aberdeen with his wife, Jill, and their son, Ethan. The couple met ten years ago while participating in a 10K challenge and have a personal connection to MND: “I wanted to do something meaningful and create precious memories for our friend. I hope my challenge can not only raise funds but also uplift their spirits. Every step I take is for them”.

Michael’s 5k-a-day challenge started on 1st January 2025 and will finish on New Year’s Day 2026.

As part of his challenge, he will take on 5K’s, 10K’s, and ParkRun’s throughout the year, and has signed up for a number of other events including the Aberdeen Kiltwalk, the Illuminator Run, the Chapelton of Elsick 10k, the Banchory Beast Race 10K and the St Cyrus 10K.

Michael added: “I lost my mum ten years ago and took up running to keep fit and take my mind off things. My mum always told me to keep smiling and keep going, and that’s what I’m hoping to do”.

Throughout his journey, Michael hopes to help make time count for other families affected by the disease by fundraising for MND Scotland.

MND Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting individuals with MND, along with their families and friends. Founded over forty years ago, the charity provides practical, financial, and emotional support while also funding essential research into effective treatments and cures.

Jonathan Mitchell, Head of Fundraising for MND Scotland, said: “We would like to say thank you to Michael for taking on this incredible challenge with such dedication and passion. His commitment to our cause not only helps to raise vital funds, but also highlights our cause, inspiring others to get involved in taking on a fundraising challenge of their own. Together, we can continue to make time count for families affected by MND”.

Michael has already raised more than half of his £500 target to support MND Scotland. Supporters can help him achieve his goal by visiting his JustGiving page to donate: https://www.justgiving.com/page/michael-hopkins-7

Every contribution, no matter how small, helps make time count for families affected by motor neuron disease.

“Love your family, work super hard, live your passion. Michael said.
