Ayrshire man helps raise £30k at charity golf day for families affected by motor neuron disease

Following the success of a recent Charity Golf Day, Ayrshire man, Andy Huxtable, has announced another fundraising event at Trump Turnberry later this year.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of participants and supporters, a Charity Golf Day organised by Andy Huxtable on 22nd October 2024 at the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club, raised an impressive £30,000 of vital funds for MND Scotland.

Andy, a 56-year-old Air Traffic Controller for NATS (National Air Traffic Services), has been a dedicated supporter of MND Scotland for over 15 years.

During this time, he has organised numerous Sportsman Dinners, Entertainment Nights, and Charity Golf Days to raise funds for MND Scotland – the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting people with MND, their families and friends.

MND is a rapidly progressing terminal illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. This can cause someone to lose the ability to walk, talk, swallow or breathe unaided and the average life expectancy is just 18 months from diagnosis.

With the help of fundraisers like Andy, MND Scotland can continue supporting hundreds of families in Scotland affected by motor neuron disease each year and move closer to finding a cure.

The Charity Golf Day in October, hosted by PGA Golf Professional Alan Tait, brought together golf enthusiasts and MND Scotland supporters to raise vital funds for the charity.

The event featured an engaging Q&A session with world renowned golf artist, Graeme Baxter, PGA Golf Professional Alistair Forsyth, and former Scottish Rugby legend, Gavin Hastings, who shared their insights and experiences with attendees.

Alistair and PGA Golf Professional Jonny Sharp put their skills to the test in the “Beat the Pro” challenge on holes 8 and 17, while Gerry Stanley, Andy Clift and MND Scotland’s Martin McLinden provided invaluable assistance to ensure the day’s success.

The success of the event was made possible through the generous support of numerous supporters, including: The Auto Lounge, Wallace Allan, Glenhawk Property Finance, The Mobile Scullery, Trump Turnberry, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club Links, Nairn Golf Club, Cabot Highlands, Prestwick Golf Club, Southerness Golf Club, Powfoot Golf Club, Silloth on Solway Golf Club, Moray Golf Club, and Cruden Bay Golf Club.

Their contributions played a crucial role in raising £30,000 and highlighted their commitment to supporting individuals and families affected by MND.

Jonathon Mitchell, Head of Fundraising for MND Scotland, said:

“Andy is a force of unstoppable nature. We are incredibly grateful for the passion and continued dedication he has shown towards MND Scotland and for raising awareness about MND. His relentless support and enthusiasm are a beacon of hope for everyone affected by MND.

“With supporters like Andy and those involved with the Charity Golf Day in October, we continue to work towards a world without MND and are able to support families affected by the disease to make time count with their loved ones. Thank you, Andy, and everyone involved”.

Looking ahead, Andy is excited to announce that the next Charity Golf Day is scheduled for Friday 26th September 2025, at Trump Turnberry, where participants will tackle the challenging King Robert the Bruce course.

Preparations are well underway to make this year’s event even more successful, and golfers and supporters are encouraged to mark their calendars.

MND Scotland would like to thank, Andy for his ongoing support to our cause, and to everyone who supported the recent event by bringing us closer to our vision of a world without motor neuron disease.
