No one in Scotland should have to face the unknown alone
We are currently supporting more people in Scotland who are facing MND – and the descent into the unknown – than ever before. And unless we can raise more money, we fear that more people will struggle with this brutal disease alone.
£20 from you today will mean that people in Scotland won’t have to face the unknown alone. Please make a donation to MND Scotland today.
This devastating disease takes so much from people – their voice, their mobility, their independence and ultimately their life. No one can say when it will happen. Just that it will.
And we are supporting more people with MND in Scotland than ever before. We are determined to always be there for people like Mert who is living with an MND diagnosis. And for his wife Frances who doesn’t know how long her husband will be by her side.
We are determined that no one in Scotland should face the unknown alone. As people like Mert and Frances descend into the unknown, MND Scotland can be by their side.
You can stop people facing the unknown alone when you donate to MND Scotland.
Mert’s Story
Mert has a large group of good friends from his time training to be a pilot. He has two daughters and a loving wife, Frances. Frances describes Mert as an ‘absolute gentleman’ and says that everyone loves him. But when Mert was diagnosed with MND, he was faced with the unknown.
As we often hear with MND, Mert’s diagnosis took a long time. His speech was slurring for a year before he received his diagnosis, and he had trouble with his right arm. In April 2024, he was finally given the devastating news that it is terminal. It is MND.
A diagnosis was a relief for Mert – he finally knew what was wrong with him. It wasn’t a relief for Frances. She knew what MND was. She cried. It was the worst possible news.
Mert was a keen marathon runner and Frances says he would run to the moon for his kids. But Mert can no longer run. One of the things that MND has cruelly taken from him. People with MND don’t know how their MND will progress or how it will impact their life. Only that it will. Mert’s family and friends rallied round but they didn’t know where to turn for help.
Families don’t know what to do, where to go for help or how to cope as their loved one’s condition becomes ever more challenging. Thanks to your donations, MND Scotland is able to support Mert and Frances, so they don’t face the unknown alone.
The family has received grants and support accessing the financial benefits they are entitled to. Mert has banked his voice in English and his native Turkish so he has a means to communicate once he loses the ability to talk. Mert and Frances have also been supported to arrange their Wills and Power of Attorney.
As people like Mert and Frances descend into the unknown MND Scotland can be the only certainty.
Mert and Frances met 32 years ago in Turkey when Frances was on holiday. Their holiday romance has stood the test of time, and they have been by each other’s side ever since. Your support means we can be by Frances’ side. As we all know it’s not just the person that is diagnosed with MND that is affected, but wider family and friends too.
