Inverness golf club raises £2,000 after member diagnosed

Kevin Mackintosh (53), from Inverness, has helped organise a charity golf day at Torvean Golf Club, raising £2,000 for MND Scotland, after one of its members was diagnosed with MND.

Gary Corbett (57), was diagnosed with the condition in November 2015, following a series of tests in June 2014.

Gary, his wife Susan and their children Paul and Michael spent the whole day at the club, where members enjoyed a game of golf followed by a lucky squares raffle.

The day raised an incredible £2,000 to support people across Scotland who are affected by MND and to help fund research into a cure.

Kevin, who helped organise the charity day, is the Sponsorship Convenor at the club.

He said: “Gary is a brilliant guy and is always willing to help anyone. He is always surrounded by very close family and friends and he still has his cheeky sense of humour.

“With the help of the committee at the club, we run a charity golf day for a local or national charity every year – and this year it was an easy choice as it’s very close to our hearts.

“Gary has been a member of Torvean Golf Club for a long time, making it easy this year to decide what charity would benefit from our charity golf day.

“The staff and committee worked extremely hard to set this up, and I would like to single out our Match and Handicap Secretary, David Milligan, for going that one step further.

“These days cannot be a success without sponsorship and for this I would like to thank Autovision Inverness and Direct Rail Services Ltd.”

Iain McWhirter, MND Scotland’s Head of Fundraising and Volunteering, said: “I’d like to thank Kevin and everybody at Torvean Golf Club in Inverness for getting behind Gary and his family and deciding to help raise awareness and funds for MND Scotland.

“The fantastic amount raised at Torvean Golf Club’s charity golf day is enough to fund two full weeks of the MND Scotland Welfare and Benefits Service, which ensures financial support to people affected by MND.

“The same money could help us provide eight months of counselling to help families come to terms with their devastating diagnosis. It could also fund the next eight MND Scotland Support Group meetings across the country, which give people affected by MND a chance to share their experiences and learn about accessing further support.

“We couldn’t provide any of this help to people without hard-working supporters, so I would like to thank Kevin, the staff and committee for getting behind this charity day.”
