By selecting MND Scotland for your YPI project, you can make a huge difference by raising vital awareness about motor neuron disease across Scotland.
Find out who we are, what we do, and how your support can help below.
Who are MND Scotland?
Since 1981 MND Scotland has been the only charity both directly supporting people affected by MND in Scotland and funding crucial MND research.
We were founded by John and Peigi McLeod after John received a diagnosis of MND. Since then, we have been there helping to make time count for those with MND in Scotland while work towards our vision of a world without motor neuron disease.
What is MND?
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal illness which stops signals from the brain from reaching the muscles. This may cause someone to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink, or breathe. The average life expectancy of someone with MND is just 18 months from diagnosis. There is no cure or meaningful treatments.
At present, there are around 480 people living with MND in Scotland, with 200 new diagnosis each year.
How do we support people affected by MND?
An MND diagnosis is incredibly difficult for both those living with MND and their loved ones. That’s why we’re committed to providing direct support to people with MND and their families living in Scotland.
Benefits advice and income maximisation
Our Welfare & Benefits Service provides professional guidance to help people claim all the benefits they’re entitled to in order to maximise their income.
Counselling service
Our Counselling Service provides free, confidential support to people living with MND and their loved ones. We also offer specialised bereavement counselling for those who have lost a loved one to MND.
Advice and support service
Our Advice and Support Service offers specialist guidance on care, housing, and home adaptations, helping people live safely and independently at home.
Voice banking funding
We work in partnership with SpeakUnique to help fund Voice Banking, enabling people with MND to preserve their voices and maintain independence in communication.
Accessible holiday lodges
For families looking for a break, we have Accessible Holiday Lodges in St Andrews and Oban. These lodges are fully accessible and equipped to meet the needs of those who require additional support, allowing them to spend more time making memories with their loved ones.
Wills and Power of Attorney
Through our legal partners we offer a Free Wills and Power of Attorney Service, giving peace of mind and legal protection for people with MND and their families.
Policy and campaigning
Through Policy and Campaigning, our team represents the voices of people with MND. We work closely with the Scottish Government and MSPs to address key issues.
What is MND?
In addition to providing support services that help make time count for families affected by motor neuron disease, MND Scotland has been making significant investments in MND research since the late 1980s. Our research funding aims to:
- Fund clinical trials such as the MND SMART trial, which test potential treatments for MND.
- Fund research to understand the causes of MND and identify new treatments or targets for treatments.
- Fund research to improve how MND is diagnosed to help speed up the diagnostic process.
- Fund social science research to help understand some of the behavioural changes that can be seen in MND, and how an MND diagnosis impacts a person, or their families’ quality of life.
- Fund projects which aim to improve the care and support services available for people affected by MND.
How you can help
Your support means so much to us. A £3,000 YPI grant would make a real and lasting difference, helping MND Scotland continue supporting families affected by motor neuron disease across Scotland.
