Record your voice
Based at Edinburgh University, SpeakUnique uses voice banking technology that allows people to communicate in their own voice via a speech aid when natural speech is no longer possible.
Who can use the service
If you have MND, live in Scotland and want to preserve your voice for the future, MND Scotland will cover the cost of you using the SpeakUnique service.
If you’re already experiencing speech difficulties, the service can also partially repair your voice as it records it. This means if you start to use a communication aid in the future, it will sound more like your normal voice.
If you have lost your speech entirely, SpeakUnique can create a bespoke voice for you to use from its large bank of voices. These include voices with Scottish regional accents.
How do I get started?
To get started, your first step would be to make a referral directly on the Speak Unique website, which you can access here: https://www.speakunique.co.uk.
The process to request funding is as follows:
- Create an account
- Record voice samples
- Speak Unique generates a synthetic voice from the recordings
- Listen to the synthetic voice samples
- Apply for funding (if you are happy with the samples)
Once the samples have been generated and you are happy with them, you’ll be able to move forward with the funding application. Please feel free to select MND Scotland as your preferred organisation for funding. From that point, Speak Unique will send the information directly to us so we can authorise the associated costs.
